How to Get Your Technical Services License in Dubai

If you’re planning to set up a technical services business in Dubai, you’ll need the right license. Here’s a simpler guide on how to secure one, whether you’re eyeing a spot in a free zone or aiming for a mainland location.

Getting Licensed in a Free Zone
Step 1: Pick Your Free Zone

Choose one that fits what your business does and offers the perks you’re after. Each one has its own set of rules and goodies.

Step 2: Register Your Company

Complete the required forms and submit the essential documents, which include three options for your trade name, a clear, full-spread copy of your passport, email addresses, and mobile numbers of all shareholders, along with their full residence address in their home country or in the UAE. If you are a UAE resident, you’ll also need to provide a clear, full-spread copy of your passport and a copy of your residence or visit visa, if applicable.

Step 3: Get Your License

Once everything’s checked and approved, you’ll get your license, and you’re all set to do business in the free zone, enjoying benefits like full ownership and tax breaks.

Getting Licensed in Dubai Mainland
Step 1: Choose a Business Structure

Decide the type of business setup that suits your needs, considering the size and nature of your work.

Step 2: Register Your Trade Name

Pick a name and get it registered with the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED). Make sure it follows their naming rules.

Step 3: Initial Approval

Get the go-ahead from the DED, which lets you move forward in getting your business up and running.

Step 4: Find an Office

You’ll need a physical space to work from, as it’s a requirement for mainland businesses.

Step 5: Local Sponsor

On the mainland, you can now have 100% ownership of your business, regardless of its nature. However, for certain business activities, you’re still required to engage a local service agent, previously known as a local sponsor, to facilitate various administrative and legal procedures.

Step 6: Submit Your Documents

Submit all required documents to the DED, including three trade name options, a clear, full-spread copy of each shareholder’s passport, and their contact details, such as email addresses and mobile numbers. Proof of residence address, either from the UAE or your home country, is also necessary. Shareholders or managers must provide a photo holding their original passport for identity verification. If you are a UAE resident, include copies of your visa (Residence or Visit Visa) and both sides of your Emirates ID. Once the DED reviews and approves your submission, you’ll receive your business license.

Step 7: Extra Approvals

Depending on what your business does, you might need some additional okays from other authorities.
